An individual, age 65 or over, has an open enrollment period starting at
the time they enroll in Part B and lasting for 6 months in which they may
enroll in any Medicare supplement plan. During this time companies must
take enrollees regardless of previous health considerations. After that
most states allow companies to refuse application for supplemental
coverage (including Ohio).
An individual my still enroll in a supplemental plan after their open
enrollment or even switch from another plan at any time, however health
condition may make obtaining cover difficult or impossible. Although an
insurance company cannot cancel an individual's coverage as long as they
continue to pay premiums.
There is also an additional open enrollment period for individuals who
have been dropped from their Medicare HMO due to the provider withdrawing
service from the area. In such cases the HMO must notify those
individuals that are being dis-enrolled and their options.
