Except for cases of disability individuals that are not automatically
enrolled but wish to apply for Medicare should do so 3 months prior to
age 65, other wise benefits may be delayed. In which case it will be
necessary to wait until the next general enrollement period to sign up.
General Enrollment periods begin each January and continue through March
with Part B benefits starting in July of that year. Putting off
enrollment will cost you though as premiums increase 10% each 12 month
period after an individual becomes eligible and does not enroll.
Those eligible that do not enroll under Part B during their initial
enrollment period must wait until the next general enrollment period,
and will pay higher premiums unless they are 65 or older and have group
health insurance from their own or their spouse's current employment.
While still under employer health plans, it is possible that one or both
parts of Medicare may help pay for costs that the health plan does not,
but Part B will require the additional monthly premium.
