Medicare Explained

Do Medicare recipients pay a premium?

At 65 seniors can become covered by Medicare Part A without a charge provided:
  • They are eligible to receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits if they have filed to receive benefit yet or not.
  • They have Medicare-covered government employment either on their own or through spouse.
  • An individual under 65 has received Social Security or Railroad Retirement Benefits for 24 months.
  • Are a kidney dialysis or kidney transplant patient
Those over 65 who do not automatically qualify may be eligible to purchase coverage, and can find out by contacting the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.

Part B however, requires a premium even for those not paying for Part A benefits. The premium of $50.00 per month is typically deducted from Social Security, Railroad Retirement or Civil Service Retirement payments.
