Medicare Explained

Who is Eligible for Medicare?

Anyone age 65 and older is eligible for Medicare if they or their spouse worked at least 10 years in Medicare-covered employment and they are citizen or permanent resident of the United States. People with certain disabilities, who are younger than 65, may eligible to receive benefits.

Medicare is the nations largest health insurance program, covering approximately 40 million people, and consists two parts. Part A helps pay for hospital stays and to a limited extend skilled nursing care to a maximum of 100 days. Part B covers the outpatient services, tests, doctors fees and other similar medical expenses. A simple analogy would be taking your car to a garage. Part A pays for the space in the garage, the tools, etc., while part B for mechanics that work on the car.

Most employers withhold Medicare from employee paycheck, with such deductions are itemized on payment stubs and W-2 forms. There are exceptions though. If you have questions concerning this you can contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.
