Medicare does not pay for private rooms or private duty nurses in a
hospital unless medically necessary. Prescription drugs, examinations
or routine physicals are not paid for unless they are taken in related
to treatment. Hear aids, eye exams, glasses and dental cares are not
paid.
Medicare does NOT pay for long-term care. In fact, the only nursing
home care that Medicare does cover is for short-term rehabilitation in a
skilled nursing facility only and only after a hospital stay for that
same condition. It will not pay for care if an individual needs only
for activities of daily living with include like bathing, eating, or
dressing.
To supplement the costs that Medicare does not pay, many seniors have
supplement health coverage either through retirement or private insurance
to cover Medicare's deductibles. In addition an increasing number of
people are planning for long-term care needs with long-term care
insurance coverage, unless income low income and asset level make
Medicaid a more appropriate option.
If you have a dispute as to whether Medicare should pay for a given
expense or its amount, you may appeal. For more information contact
your local Medicare office.
