Medicare is the nations largest health insurer covering nearly 40 million
seniors and disables Americans. It does this in two components: Part A
(hospital coverage) and Part B (medical coverage). Many people whether
enrolled in Medicare or not find it confusing. Few know very little
about what it does and doesn't covers, until they are billed for
something Medicare doesn't cover that they expected it to pay.
Medicare is the nations largest health insurance program, covering
approximately 40 million people, and consists two parts. Part A helps
pay for hospital stays and to a limited extend skilled nursing care to a
maximum of 100 days. Part B covers the outpatient services, tests,
doctors fees and other similar medical expenses. A simple analogy would
be taking your car to a garage. Part A pays for the space in the garage,
the tools, etc., while part B for mechanics that work on the car.
Under the standard program (the Original Medicare Plan), there are no
restrictions on doctors or hospitals as long as the facility or physician
accepts Medicare. Some, depending on the area in which they live, have
the ability to join a Medicare HMO. Under these plans a patients
out-of-pocket expenses can be reduced, but typically the choice of care
providers is restricted.
